Top Exercises For An Injured Hand

Dealing with hand pain is a challenge. Whether you are suffering from arthritis, carpal tunnel, or physical trauma, hand pain can limit you in your day-to-day life. Holding a toothbrush, being able to write, and even opening doors can become a challenge. At Theradynamics, we provide cutting-edge sports and physical therapy rehab, so you can get back to normal life as soon as possible. If you are suffering from a hand injury, doing exercises and stretching can help you regain functionality. Here are a few physical therapy exercises for your hand that can help you recover from an injured hand.

Tendon Gliding

This exercise works by holding a fist in different ways to stretch out the tendons in your wrist. First, make a straight fist, then rotate up into a full fist, and then down into a hook fist.

Wrist Rotating

Start by standing up or sitting in a chair with your arms at your sides and bent at a 90-degree angle. Begin with your palms facing up, then rotate them down, and repeat.

Thumb Extension

To perform the thumb extension, hold your arm out, palm open, and move your thumb towards the middle of your hand and then back again. Repeat this motion to strengthen and stretch your thumb.

Wrist Movement

Begin by putting your arms flat on a table. With your palms facing inwards, move your hands up and down. Holding your hands off the edge of a surface can help you gain the full range of motion.

Pinch Strengthening

This exercise is exactly what it sounds like. Find a small foam or squishy item and pinch it repeatedly with each finger for about a minute at a time.

Wrist Extensions

Just like wrist movement, place your arms flat on a table with your hands off the edge. Instead of having your palms face inwards, keep them face down and move your wrists up and down.

Grip Strengthening

Squeeze a stress ball or grip strengthener as tightly as possible 10-15 times with each hand.

Thumb Touch

Hold your hand in the upright position. Take each finger and stretch them to your thumb.

Claw Stretch

Begin by holding your arm out in front of you. With your palm facing away from you, form a claw shape with your hand and hold this position for 45-60 seconds.
